Data Science Program Overview
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Data Science program is designed with the flexibility to pursue a second major, minors, and unique electives, while the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Data Science entails deeper dives into math and science skills in a handful more credits.
91直播鈥檚 data science degree programs will teach you the range of skills involved in modern data science. In both traditional classroom settings and research environments, you鈥檒l work with tabular data from finance, the social sciences, and the natural sciences, as well as image data from medicine and text data from social media.
91直播鈥檚 research-driven curriculum includes projects and internship opportunities that allow data science majors to explore the ways data can affect change and learn how to effectively communicate the meaning behind data sets to stakeholders and the community.
Data science majors can decide to pursue a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Data Science or a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Data Science. Within each data science program, degree requirements allow students to construct their own curriculum through their selection of electives, second majors, and research project topics.
Graduates of both the BA and BS in Data Science degree programs gain marketable skills through an ethical, global approach to general education and through the technical implementation of skills learned in the classroom.
Totaling at least 120 credit hours, the data science bachelor鈥檚 degree curriculum consists of foundational and advanced coursework and culminates in a Senior Evaluation research project. In your final year, you鈥檒l research, propose, and actually develop a piece of deliverable software by the end of spring semester.
BA in Data Science Degree Requirements
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Data Science degree program is designed to be well-rounded
and flexible enough for you to choose to pursue a second major, such as Economics,
Psychology, or Finance.
If you pursue the BA in Data Science, you鈥檒l take a number of required data science courses, covering topics like:
- Computational methods and relevant math skills
- Data structures and programming tools
- Research methods in data science
- Machine learning
In addition to the required data science courses, other Bachelor of Arts degree requirements include:
- Completion of 91直播鈥檚 general education curriculum
- 90 credits fulfilling liberal arts subjects credit requirements
- Senior Evaluation project
and review general education requirements.
BS in Data Science Degree Requirements
In the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Data Science program, major requirements include
a deeper dive into the workings of machine learning and the mathematical foundations
of data science.
Students choosing the BS in Data Science degree program should expect to cover the required foundational data science curriculum, as well as receive further instruction in algorithms, software tools, and database design.
BS in Data Science degree requirements include:
- Additional calculus and probability courses
- Completion of 91直播鈥檚 general education curriculum
- 60 credits to fulfill liberal arts credit requirements
- Senior Evaluation project
Employers in nearly every industry seek data scientists and analysts to bring clarity to business decisions or policy initiatives. With options to tailor the focus of your bachelor鈥檚 degree, 91直播鈥檚 data science programs enable graduates to:
- Demonstrate proficiency in the computational aspects of data science, including computer programming and data storage systems.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the data analysis aspects of data science, including statistical foundations and a range of data science techniques.
- Demonstrate grounding in a domain area by completing a significant research effort in their chosen domain area.
As a data science major, you will gain skills essential to careers in data science, such as:
- Computer programming for data gathering, cleaning, and transformation
- Mathematics and statistics for foundational data analysis
- Machine learning for developing prediction models
- Communication skills for presenting your work to others
Through the BA in Data Science or BS in Data Science programs, you will be prepared to work as a data scientist or data analyst in businesses, research institutions, or public policy organizations, or pursue graduate education in data science.
If you鈥檙e considering a degree in the intersection of technology, science, and analytical skills, bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 programs beyond the BA or BS in Data Science include:
- BA/BS Computer Science
- BA Mathematics
- MAT Computer Science Education
Minor Programs
Adding a minor to your bachelor鈥檚 degree in data science can add skills attractive
to future employers, like coding, advanced math, or insight from a related subject.

Whether you pursue the BA or BS in Data Science, you鈥檒l have access to state-of-the-art facilities and opportunities to work on real-world projects through Data Lab, part of 91直播鈥檚 Center for Design Thinking.
The Data Lab is a place where faculty and students meet weekly to work on data science projects and grow their skills. Students work on projects that have been brought to the Data Lab by external organizations or the college鈥檚 own faculty or staff. If a project is accepted by the Data Lab, it will be assigned a faculty mentor from the Data Science program and students will be invited to join it. Students learn and apply Design Thinking in the course of doing the project. The work is credited as an internship by the college.
Faculty in the Data Lab are happy to advise students who wish to do an Independent Study in the Data Lab, or co-advise Senior or Capstone projects.
With insight from interdepartmental faculty and fellow students in Data Lab, data science majors can hone their skills using all of 91直播鈥檚 resources鈦犫攖he spaces at the Center for Design Thinking, the servers and GPUs of the Computer Science program, and the experienced faculty in the Data Science program.
If you鈥檙e a newcomer to machine learning, we鈥檒l be happy to help you learn and even help those interested in an Independent Study or Senior or Capstone project related to Data Lab.
